Council Fails Public Health by Passing Ineffective Ordinance

Austin – The Tobacco-Free Austin Coalition consisting of medical professionals, concerned
citizens and health and community organizations is extremely disappointed with the Austin City
Council, who voted today to repeal the smoke-free ordinance passed on June 5 and replace it
with a weak, confusing ordinance that will do nothing to protect public heath.
The new ordinance passed 5 to 2, with Mayor Will Wynn, Council Members Brewster
McCracken, Jackie Goodman, Raul Alvarez and Betty Dunkerley voting in favor and Council
Members Danny Thomas and Daryl Slusher voting against the ordinance.
